(11:45AM - 8/28/20) A storm system moving through the region today will bring a low end threat for severe t'storms to much of Northern and Central Illinois. Additionally, the remnants of Hurricane Laura will bring a low end severe t'storm threat across portions of Southern Illinois.
A large complex of showers and t'storms has been weakening as it moves across portions of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa this morning. This complex will leave a lot of debris activity in its wake, thus limiting later development along the cold front moving across the same areas. Isolated to scattered showers and t'storms will be possible this afternoon and evening across Northern and Central Illinois, well ahead of the approaching cold front. Additional isolated to scattered showers and t'storms are still expected to also develop along the cold front this afternoon, moving across portions of Northern and Central Illinois later this afternoon into early tonight. An environment in place will feature moderate instability, high moisture, good shear and good forcing. Upwards of a minimal severe t'storm threat is expected across much Northern and Central Illinois, with damaging winds, large hail and an isolated tornado being the main threats. It should be noted that none of the activity today into tonight across Northern and Central Illinois will be widespread, meaning a lot of areas that have been dry and looking for some good rains will miss out.
Further south, the remnants of Hurricane Laura are tracking south of the Ohio River today. This will be close enough to pose a very low end severe t'storm threat across far Southeast Illinois. Damaging winds and an isolated tornado will be the main threats. A localized flood threat will also exist, with localized rainfall totals of 1.00"+ possible. Outside of severe t'storm and general t'storm potential, breezy conditions are expected, with wind gusts of 20-40mph being possible.
Below is the severe t'storm forecast for this afternoon - tonight.
