(7:24PM - 12/15/19) A brief short term update regarding the ongoing winter storm affecting the state.
A large area of light to moderate snow has been moving across the heart of the state this afternoon and evening. There have been some pockets of heavy snow, with 1-2"/hour snowfall rates at times. Snow will continue for affected areas into night, eventually slowly ending from west to east. A lull will then set in for most areas late tonight an into mid Monday morning, before the 2nd wave moves in. Snowfall accumulations thus far have been widespread in the 1-3", with a corridor of 3-6" having occurred between the I-72 and I-70 corridors in Central/Southern Illinois. Additional accumulation with this first wave is expected across the heart of the state, upwards of 1-3".
The 2nd wave of snow is still expected on Monday, with additional snowfall accumulation likely for portions of central and Southern Illinois. Final snowfall totals look on track at this time for most areas, with a corridor of 6-9" still likely for portions of Central/Southern Illinois, namely between the I-72 and I-70 corridors...with amounts tapering with distance north and south of this area.
