11/11-11/12 Record Cold Temperatures Possible Next Week

11/6/2019

Medium range model guidance continues to show a very cold pattern unfolding across the Midwest early next week as several Canadian high pressure systems come on down into the region. This will set the stage for potential record breaking temperatures early next week....I dig into the details below.
In the loop below, you can see the very cold/record breaking cold air mass coming on down from Canada late this upcoming weekend and into early next week. This is going to lead to a few days of cold that we are used to seeing during the heart of winter and in January. Heck, the air on the way could even up being "below normal" for what we see in January.

Looking at specifics a bit, below is one models take on daytime HIGHS on Monday afternoon next week. As you can see, much of Illinois will be well into the 20's with far northern Illinois potentially remaining in the low to mid 20's. This is nearly 30 degrees BELOW NORMAL for this time of year when average highs for O'hare Airport/Chicago are in the low to mid 50's.

Looking ahead one day to next Tuesday, the very cold air will roll on with another day of widespread highs in the 20's across the state. These numbers are not set in stone but there remains good agreement on an outbreak of very cold temperatures across the Midwest.

Using Chicago O'hare Airport as a reference point for potentially breaking some records....

Record low max temperature on November 11th (Monday) is 28 degrees
Record low max temperature on November 12th (Tuesday) is 28 degrees

Both of these records look to be in play....
Updated forecasts will continue on this over the coming days but prepare now for a very cold temperatures for this time of year next Monday and Tuesday across the Midwest and here in Illinois.
