11/12 It's A Bit Nippy Outside, Huh? Record Cold Temperatures Today!

Well it is here! The record cold temperatures that we have been talking about for a week now arrived into the region and into Illinois late tonight and early this morning and are here to stay through the day, potentially into tomorrow morning as well. Looking at several sites across Illinois earlier this morning as a recap of some records, both Rockford and Chicago (O'hare Airport) set record lows. O'hare got down to 7 degrees breaking the previous record of 8 set in 1986 and Rockford got down to 3 degrees this morning which breaks the previous record of 7 set in 1986. Further downstate, Quincy, IL dropped to 5 degrees which breaks the previous record of 10 degrees also set in 1986 and St Louis got down to 11 degrees, breaking the previous record of 12 degrees set in 1911. 

Looking at some select areas across the state, here is what were the lowest wind chill values were. This is from the northern Illinois area. 

This is from the northwest and western Illinois area showing earlier morning low temperatures and wind chill values. 

The Quad Cities National Weather Service office got down to nearly 5 degrees below zero this morning, located just on the other side of the Mississippi River. 

Looking across central Illinois, here are more low temperatures this morning and what wind chills were at 7am. 

Temperatures have come up some so far early this afternoon but still much of the state is still in the low to mid teens and these will not rise much more today outside of a few more degrees. More areas will also break their record low max record with such daytime highs this afternoon. Like previously mentioned, the record low max at O'hare is 28 degrees and it is only 14 degrees there, most likely remaining in the upper teens, shattering that record.
