1/19-1/20 Coldest Air Of The Winter Arrives By Sunday Morning (Update #1)

1/17/2020

It continues to look like the coldest weather of the season will be invading the Midwest and Illinois behind our winter system, with much colder air arriving as early as Saturday night into some areas of the state. Thankfully this will be occurring on a Sunday and then the M.L.K holiday on Monday. More information follows below.....
Saturday morning and parts of the afternoon will actually be a decently warm day for some downstate in the 40's and even 50's but as you can see on the included animation below (running from 9am Saturday through 6pm Sunday night), the cold air quickly moves in from the west and northwest Saturday night. With continued gusty westerly and northwest winds, some really impressive wind chills will come out of this arctic air outbreak, as you'll see below. This loop only runs through Sunday night but Monday will also be very cold as well.

The coldest period continues to look like it will be Sunday morning with forecast wind chills at 6am shown below. As you can see, the coldest wind chills will reside across the northern third or so of the state where there is potential for wind chills colder than -20 degrees Sunday morning.

Monday morning though will also be no slouch either and with continued brisk winds out of the west and northwest, wind chills again will be in the -10 to -20 degree range with a few outlying areas across northwest Illinois possibly seeing values colder than that. As mentioned yesterday, southern Illinois will escape the worst but even areas down there could see wind chill values at or below zero.
