Active Pattern Ahead. Monitoring Multiple Weather Systems

1/3/2019

Good evening Illinois residents and Happy New Year!

Aside from a couple recent dustings of snow, things have been pretty quiet. Looking ahead we appear to be entering a more active pattern, with several systems being modeled we will have to watch. Right now these appear to be mostly rain makers as the pattern should also be mild.
The first system will pass south of Illinois on Friday, grazing the southern tip of the state with some light to moderate rain.

Temperatures will remain on the mild side, and by Monday they will be well above seasonal norms. Highs in Northern Illinois could reach into the 50s! Normal highs are around 30 this time of year.

At this time the next weather maker will be moving in. Given the well above normal tracks, and a storm track to our north and west, rain will once again be the favored form of precip. Depending on the strength of the system its possible to see some embedded thunderstorms as well, and maybe a heavier rain threat along with it.

Things look to quiet down for a couple days after that, but by the weeks end (say from the 9th through 11th) another storm system approaches. at this point we're getting further out in model land, so confidence on exact details begins to decrease. The system has been consistent in the longer range models for a few days now - so its worth mentioning.

As shown, this could be a dynamic system - however once again it is being show tracking to our northwest, keeping us in the warm sector with temperatures much above normal. Once again a heavy rain and even thunderstorm threat would present itself here. If the storm takes on a southern track it could put us in line for wintry weather - something for snow lovers to wish for.

Bottom line, it looks like mild temperatures and rain will rule the near term weather pattern! After a snowy November, it seems Old Man Winter hit the road. One can never turn their backs during an active pattern though, a simple southern shift in a storms track can make the difference between heavy rain and heavy snow. We'll be watching!
