Image: Eliot Herman at the Utah Desert Observation THE WEATHER HAS BEEN GREAT THE PAST FEW DAYS FOR BACKYARD VIEWING OF THE NIGHT SKY AND THE UNIVERSE RECENTLY PRESENTED US WITH A NEW TARGET - A SUPERNOVA.
YOU CAN VIEW THE BIRTH OF THE SUPERNOVA HERE. THE PINWHEEL GALAXY, DESPITE BEING LOCATED AROUND 21 MILLION LIGHT YEARS AWAY, HAS PRODUCED THE CLOSED SUPERNOVA TO EARTH IN THE LAST DECADE. THE GALAXY ITESELF LIES IN THE HANDLE OF THE BIG DIPPER AND WHILE YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO SEE IT WITH THE NAKED EYE, ANYONE WITH A BACKYARD TELESCOPE SHOULD BE ABLE TO LOCATE THIS CELESTIAL PHENOMENON. IT IS SUSPECTED THAT THE SUPERNOVA IS THE RESULT OF A MASSIVE STAR THAT COLLAPSED UPON ITSELF AT THE END OF ITS LIFE CYCLE. GIVEN THE GALAXY CONTAINING THE SUPERNOVA ORIGINATED FROM IS ROUGHLY 21 MILLION LIGHT YEARS AWAY AND THE LIGHT FROM THE SUPERNOVA EVENT IS JUST NOW REACHING EARTCH, WE'RE TECHNICALLY GOING BACK IN TIME AND LOOKING INTO THE PAST. THE VASTNESS OF OUR UNIVERSE IS GENUINELY UNFATHOMABLE. DESPITE BEING DETECTED A WEEK AGO, IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE SUPERNOVA WILL BE VISIBLE THROUGH THE SUMMER. FOR THOSE OF YOU (LIKE MYSELF) WITHOUT ANY BACKYARD ASTRONOMY EQUIPMENT, YOU CAN VIEW A LIVE STREAM OF THE SUPERNOVA VIA THE VIRTUAL TELESCOPE PROJECT 2.0 TONIGHT HERE.
