(1:30PM - 12/31/19) Another year is in the books, and we now look forward to the new year that is upon us. Running a bit late with this forecast due to the snow event last night and into this morning, but alas here it is...
For the rest of today and tonight... Some breaks in the cloud deck are starting to occur across Northwest and Western Illinois. Across far Southern Illinois, skies have been mostly clear all day. Expect gradually clearing skies over the entire state this evening and overnight. Winds are also expected to continue to gradually diminish across the state into this evening. Low temperatures tonight will range from the upper 10's to mid 20's across Northern Illinois, to the mid 20's to low 30's across Central Illinois, and the upper 20's to low 30's across Southern Illinois.
Midnight...
Expect partly cloudy skies for much of the state, with temperatures ranging from the low-mid 20's across Northern Illinois, to the upper 20's to low 30's across Central and Southern Illinois. New Years Day... The return to winter-like conditions will have been brief, with a quick rebounding warm up to more mild temperatures for much of the state expected on Wednesday. Under partly cloudy to clear skies, high temperatures will range from the upper 30's to mid 40's across Northern Illinois, to the mid 40's to low 50's across Central and Southern Illinois.

(7:30PM - 12/30/19) Two storm systems that have been moving through the region the past few days brought heavy rain and mild temperatures to the state this weekend. On the backside of these storm systems, a brief return to winter-like conditions is occurring, with accumulating snow expected for portions of the state this evening through Tuesday morning.
Monday Morning-Tuesday Morning...
On the backside of the second storm system moving through the region, scattered snow showers occurred across portions of Northern Illinois this morning, bringing a dusting of snow to some areas. Additional scattered snow showers have been occurring across portions of Northern Illinois late this afternoon and evening. Some areas have picked up a dusting of snow with this activity. Of more focus is an area of snow that is expected to push southward out of Wisconsin and Minnesota, and down into Northern Illinois early tonight. This period of snow will then continue overnight, before ending Tuesday morning. Final snowfall accumulations for this event will generally range from a dusting to 2" for most areas across Northern Illinois...potentially into portions of Central Illinois as well. However, isolated higher snowfall totals of 2-3" will be possible closer to the Illinois/Wisconsin border. This snowfall will likely lead to travel issues across Northern Illinois for Tuesday morning. In addition to the snow, windy conditions are expected across much of Northern and portions of Central Illinois this evening through Tuesday morning. Wind gusts of 25-45mph will be possible during this time. Some blowing snow will be possible tonight into Tuesday morning for some areas, especially in prone areas. Below is the TAM snowfall forecast for this event.

(11:00PM) A series of two storm systems will move through the region over the next few days. These storm systems will bring heavy rain, mild temperatures and then some accumulating snow.
Saturday Evening-Sunday Afternoon... The first storm system and first round of heavy rain and isolated t’storms moved across the state Saturday evening through this morning. Widespread rainfall totals across the state ranged from 0.75-1.50” with this round. Temperatures also were on the rise Saturday night, with temperatures in 50’s spreading across the state. These mild temperatures continued through the day, before falling Sunday night.
Sunday Afternoon-Monday Morning...
As the second storm system pushes through the region, an area of heavy rain has overspread a good portion of the state this evening. This activity will continue to push across much of the state into tonight, before ending from southwest to northeast late tonight and early Monday morning. Widespread rainfall totals of 0.25-1.25” are likely across the state with this second round. It should be noted that far Northwest and Western Illinois will likely miss much of this round of activity. Monday Morning-Tuesday Morning... On the backside of the storm system, isolated to scattered snow showers will be possible across Northern and Central Illinois Monday morning and afternoon. Little to no snowfall accumulation is expected. Of more focus will be an area of snow that is expected to drop south out of Wisconsin and Minnesota, down into Northern Illinois by late Monday afternoon and Monday evening. This period of snow will then continue through Monday night, before ending Tuesday morning. Some snowfall accumulation is looking likely during this time, with upwards of dusting to 3” being possible for a good portion of Northern Illinois...though the highest totals will be closer to the Illinois/Wisconsin border. This could lead to some travel issues across Northern Illinois for Tuesday morning.
Final rainfall accumulation for this period will be 0.75-2.50” across much of the state. Some minor flooding will be possible, for areas that see the higher end rainfall totals. Final snowfall totals could reach upwards of a dusting to 3” across portions of Northern Illinois. Further updates are likely regarding this multi-day period.

(1:00PM - 12/27/19) After an early start to winter, with back to back snow storms and record cold at the end of October into early November...Winter has generally been on hiatus for the most part since then. The pattern has generally been mild and relatively snow-less, and this is now extending through the Christmas holiday.
This Christmas featured rare, unusual and record breaking mild temperatures across the state. High temperatures Christmas Eve ranged from the low 50's to low 60's across the state. High temperatures Christmas Day ranged from the upper 50's to upper 60's across the state. High temperatures on Dec 26th ranged from the mid 50's to upper 60's across the state. This period of mild temperatures has occurred across not only Illinois, but much of the region as well. Additionally, outside of some remaining snow across portions of South/Central Illinois, a white Christmas did not occur across the state, or much of the region for that matter.
Below is a list of select cities, with actual/record high/lows for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Dec 26th. Several records were tied or broken during this period.
