​(10:00AM Sat, Dec 31st 2022) A brief look at weather conditions expected tonight for New Years, for anyone traveling or out enjoying festivities across the state. Temperatures will be tolerable, and a bit above average for the time of year, with temperatures in the 30's to 40's from north to south across the state. As a weak disturbance moves through the region, there will also be the chance for scattered rain showers across portions of Northern and Central Illinois. With temperatures a bit cooler across portions of Northwest and North-Central Illinois, a bit of patchy freezing rain showers may be possible.

Notes...
•Cool/mild temperatures are expected across the state tonight, with temperatures expected to range from the 30's north to the 40's south cross the state. Scattered rain showers will be possible across portions of Northern and Central Illinois tonight, with the potential for some patchy freezing rain showers across Northwest and North-Central Illinois. Mainly dry conditions are expected across Southern Illinois.

Summer-Winter 2022 Drought - Dec 29th Update

​​​(5:00PM Thur, Dec 29th 2022) The latest NOAA drought monitor update valid December 27th, 2022 continues to show a large portion of Illinois is experiencing drought conditions, ranging from abnormally dry (D0) to severe drought (D2) conditions. The most significant and widespread drought conditions continue to be across Southeastern and Southern Illinois. With this update, there has been little to no change in drought conditions across the state.

Impacts...
•Drought conditions across the state have shown little to no change since the previous update, on Dec 22nd.
•Abnormally dry (D0) to severe drought (D2) conditions continue across a large portion of the state.
•While areal coverage across the state is widespread, the most significant drought conditions continue to be across Southeastern and Southern Illinois.

​The next drought monitor update will be on January 5th.

Christmas 2022 Forecast

​(5:00PM Fri, Dec 23rd 2022) A cold and dry Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are on tap for Illinois, on Saturday and Sunday. On top of the continued cold temperatures and wind chills expected through the Christmas weekend, windy conditions with blowing and drifting snow will continue to be possible on Christmas Eve as well. As we end Christmas weekend, another storm system will move into the region, bringing the chance for snow across portions of the state, Christmas Day night/Sunday night into Monday.

Notes...
•Christmas Eve: Cold temperatures and wind chills continue. Windy conditions continue as well, with blowing and drifting snow possible, especially across rural/open areas of the state.
•Christmas Day: Dry conditions and continued cold temperatures and wind chills, but a bit less so than previous days. Chances for snow increase Christmas Day/Sunday night across the state.

​​(6:30PM Thur, Dec 22nd 2022) The latest NOAA drought monitor update valid December 20th, 2022 continues to show a large portion of Illinois is experiencing drought conditions, ranging from abnormally dry (D0) to severe drought (D2) conditions. The most significant and widespread drought conditions continue to be across Southeastern and Southern Illinois. With this update, drought conditions have improved across the state. Widespread and heavy precipitation across the state last week has lead to the improvement of drought conditions, including the removal of extreme drought (D3) conditions that had been in place across far Southern Illinois.

Impacts...
•Drought conditions across the state have improved since the previous update, on Dec 15th.
•Abnormally dry (D0) to severe drought (D2) conditions continue across a large portion of the state.
•While areal coverage across the state is widespread, the most significant drought conditions continue to be across Southern Illinois.

​(9:00AM Thur, Dec 22nd 2022) A multifaceted winter storm will impact the region over the coming days, leading up to Christmas. This winter storm will bring accumulating snow, high winds and cold temperatures across portions of the region and state.

​Timing & Location...
•Wednesday night - Saturday, Dec 21-24th: All of Illinois.

Impacts...
•A winter storm will impact the region and state, Wednesday night through Saturday, Dec 21-24th.
•Snowfall totals upwards of 1-3" to 2-5" are expected across the state, with locally higher amounts possible.
•High winds are expected across the state, with wind gusts upwards of 30-50MPH likely, and locally higher wind gusts possible. Isolated power outages and minor tree damage is possible.
•The combination of the expected snow and high winds will cause blowing and drifting snow, especially in rural/open areas. Near blizzard conditions will be possible a times.
•Cold temperatures and wind chills are expected, with peak wind chill values ranging from -10 to -35 across the state.
