Dangerously Cold And Life Threatening Wind Chills Expected Friday Morning (Jan. 25th) Across Portions Of Illinois

(5:15PM - 1/23/19) After what was a busy start to this week with a winter storm across northern portions of the state that brought a variety of precipitation types and accumulating snow, the pattern across the Midwest will go quiet for the next few days. However, this doesn't mean there wont be any noteworthy weather to talk about as the main story heading into the end of this week will be some serious and dangerously cold temperatures across portions of the state on Friday morning.
I briefly dig into the setup and some details below...

A very favorable synoptic pattern will develop with an impressively deep trough located across southeast Canada, extending southward into the eastern U.S. by late Thursday night and into Friday morning. Below you're able to see the textbook setup with the trough centered off to our east and allows for very cold air to dump southeast into the northern plains and Midwest.

As you can see in the loop below, very cold temperatures advect southeast into Illinois on the wings of strong northwest winds on the northeast side of the high pressure system. Now, the worst of the cold will be centered across the northern half of state but by no means will southern Illinois escaped unscathed. Temperatures down that way will still get down into the single digits by Friday morning.

Below is forecast temperatures across the region, including here in Illinois by Friday morning. As you can tell, the coldest temperatures are centered across northern Illinois where they get down into the negative teens which would be the coldest air of the season thus far.

The even bigger story however will be the dangerously cold and potentially life threatening wind chills that will be common across the northern half of the state Friday morning. Temperatures in the -5 to -15 degree range coupled with still fairly strong and gusty west winds will lead to extremely cold wind chill values across the area. Below are forecast wind chills at 6am on Friday morning.

As mentioned above, this shot of very cold air will be centered across the northern half of the state where wind chill values could get as cold as -30 degrees below zero!!

This is only the beginning too as we could see even colder temperatures and wind chills across the Midwest later next week, following a potential bigger snow event. Be sure to stay tuned for new updates and article posts.
