Feb 5th-6th Snowstorm Ongoing Across Portions Of Illinois This Afternoon

Snow is ongoing this afternoon across portions of the state as you'll see and we continue to monitor this system as it makes its way through the Midwest this afternoon and through tonight. The latest follows below....

Our two upper level waves are shown below, located across the central plains and then the southern one is located across New Mexico this afternoon. This southern system is the one responsible for the area of low pressure that is developing across the southern Mississippi River Valley this afternoon 

Taking a look at regional radar, we can see a widespread area of precipitation is ongoing across much of Illinois this afternoon. An area of accumulating snow exists on the north and northwest side while areas across southern Illinois are seeing mostly if not all rain given the warmer surface temperatures above freezing. 

Below is an animation of a high resolution model showing the entire evolution of this system from this afternoon through tomorrow evening. You can see snow moving northeast through central and northern Illinois, continuing into the evening and overnight hours. By tomorrow morning and more so by afternoon, lake effect snow will become the norm across northeast Illinois, including the Chicago metro area while the rest of the state begins to dry out and quiet down.
