Fri-Sun, Jan. 18-20th Winter Storm Update #13

1/19/2019

(12:45PM - 1/19/19) Saturday mid-day update on the winter storm that continues to be ongoing across portions of the state at the time...

The snow has now come to an end across much of Northern and Central Illinois. Across far Northeast Illinois and the Chicago area, a few light lake effect flurries and snow showers are still ongoing at time this. This activity will continue through the day, with an increase in intensity and coverage expected by this evening, and continuing through tonight. Periods of moderate to heavy snow and snowfall rates of 1-2" an hour likely at times. This activity will likely extend 2 counties inland from the lake at times, with the best chances across Lake and Cook counties. Additional accumulations of 2-5" are expected with the lake effect snow. Remember, lake effect snow is very hit or miss, so not everyone in will see this activity, and snowfall amounts will greatly vary over short periods of time.
Farther south, an area of rain across Southern Illinois is slowly changing to snow as colder air wraps in on the backside of the storm system. After this changeover occurs, a couple hour period of snow is likely for many areas, with all snow ending from east to west this evening. Widespread accumulations of 1-3" are likely in the main snow axis, with locally higher amounts possible, especially closer to the Illinois/Indiana border.

Below is our updated TAM snowfall forecast for final storm and lake effect snowfall totals. Note: Much of Northern and Central Illinois has been left out due to no additional snowfall expected there, thus there is no reason to change the previous map you can see hidden. Additionally, these are final expected totals, not additional totals.
