(8:00PM - 5/7/20) The calendar might say we are well into May, but the weather will not agree with that the next several days...As rare and unusual May cold is on the way.
Synopsis... A very unusual pattern for this time of year will be setting up for the next several days, with a developing deep Eastern US trough setting up for several days. As this occurs and with the weather pattern supporting a cross polar flow, cold air from Northern Canada and the Arctic will be transported southward into the Eastern US. This will bring rare, unusual and potentially record breaking cold temperatures for this late into May for not only portions of Illinois, but for a large portion of the Eastern US. Accumulating snow will not be an issue for us in Illinois, but several inches of snow is likely across portions of the Northeast. These cold temperatures will have to potential significantly impact vegetation/crops, with precautions recommended for protection. This overall push of cold air will come in two waves...The first tonight into Saturday and the second Sunday into Tuesday.
Thursday night - Friday Morning...
As a cold front sweeps across the state tonight, colder temperatures will begin to filter in. Low temperatures down into the mid-upper 30's are likely across Northern Illinois. With relaxing winds, some frost will be possible for portions of Northern Illinois. Friday... While high temperatures will be limited to the upper 40's to mid 50's across Central and Southern Illinois, of focus will be Northern Illinois. Across Northern Illinois high temperatures will only range from the low-mid 40's. These readings will be close to record low max temperatures for the date for some areas. In addition to the cold temperatures, a few isolated rain/snow showers will be possible across Northeast Illinois. ![]()
Friday night - Saturday morning...
Friday night into Saturday morning will feature the coldest temperatures of this several day period. Low temperatures will range from the mid 20's to low 30's across Northern Illinois, the upper 20's to low 30's across Central Illinois, and the low-mid 30's across Southern Illinois. A freeze to hard freeze is expected across Northern Illinois, with a freeze possible across a good portion of Central Illinois, and a frost likely across Southern Illinois. Even one night of temperatures at these levels could significantly impact vegetation/crops at this early stage of the growing season. All precautions should be taken to protect and limit crop/vegetation damage. Several records are in jeopardy of being broken across much of the state. Saturday - Sunday... Conditions will still be unseasonably cool for high temperatures on Saturday, low temperatures Saturday night, and high temperatures on Sunday. However, at this time temperatures will not be a significantly cool levels. This period will serve as a lull between the first wave of cold air and the second wave. However...A storm system will be moving through the region, and with the next push of colder air ready to move in, snow may attempt to mix in with rain on Sunday across portions of Northern Illinois. This is far from a likelihood, but is possible.
