Heavy Rain And Warm Temperatures...Followed By Accumulating Snow (Sat-Tue, Dec 28-31st) Update #2

12/29/2019

(11:00PM) A series of two storm systems will move through the region over the next few days. These storm systems will bring heavy rain, mild temperatures and then some accumulating snow.

Saturday Evening-Sunday Afternoon...
The first storm system and first round of heavy rain and isolated t’storms moved across the state Saturday evening through this morning. Widespread rainfall totals across the state ranged from 0.75-1.50” with this round. Temperatures also were on the rise Saturday night, with temperatures in 50’s spreading across the state. These mild temperatures continued through the day, before falling Sunday night.
Sunday Afternoon-Monday Morning...
As the second storm system pushes through the region, an area of heavy rain has overspread a good portion of the state this evening. This activity will continue to push across much of the state into tonight, before ending from southwest to northeast late tonight and early Monday morning. Widespread rainfall totals of 0.25-1.25” are likely across the state with this second round. It should be noted that far Northwest and Western Illinois will likely miss much of this round of activity.

Monday Morning-Tuesday Morning...
On the backside of the storm system, isolated to scattered snow showers will be possible across Northern and Central Illinois Monday morning and afternoon. Little to no snowfall accumulation is expected. Of more focus will be an area of snow that is expected to drop south out of Wisconsin and Minnesota, down into Northern Illinois by late Monday afternoon and Monday evening. This period of snow will then continue through Monday night, before ending Tuesday morning. Some snowfall accumulation is looking likely during this time, with upwards of dusting to 3” being possible for a good portion of Northern Illinois...though the highest totals will be closer to the Illinois/Wisconsin border. This could lead to some travel issues across Northern Illinois for Tuesday morning.
Final rainfall accumulation for this period will be 0.75-2.50” across much of the state. Some minor flooding will be possible, for areas that see the higher end rainfall totals. Final snowfall totals could reach upwards of a dusting to 3” across portions of Northern Illinois. Further updates are likely regarding this multi-day period.

Below is our TAM snowfall forecast for this event.
