Heavy Rainfall And Warm Temperatures...Followed By Accumulating Snow? (Sat-Tue, Dec 28-31st)

12/28/2019

(3:45PM) A series of two storm systems will move through the region over the next 3 or so days. These storm systems will bring heavy rain, mild temperatures and then potentially some accumulating snow.

Saturday Evening-Sunday Afternoon...
As the lead storm system begins to eject into the region, a few scattered showers have occurred across portions of the state later last night and into this afternoon. The main focus will be this evening on through Sunday morning. A large broken area of heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms will push into the western portions of the state this evening. This activity will then overspread and push across much of the state tonight, before ending from west to east Sunday morning. Widespread rainfall totals of 0.25-1.50” are likely across the state with this first round. With this round of rain and thunderstorms will come a rise in temperatures across the state. Tonight temperatures will rise into the 50’s and 60’s across the state. These warm temperatures will continue into Sunday afternoon, before a cold front passes, and temperatures begin to fall. It is possible that high temperatures on Sunday will approach record high levels for the date across the eastern half of the state.
Sunday Afternoon-Monday Morning...
A second period of heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms will then push into the state Sunday afternoon. This activity will then overspread and push across much of the state Sunday evening and night, before ending from southwest to northeast late Sunday night or early Monday morning. Widespread rainfall totals of 0.25-1.50” are likely across the state with this first round.

Monday Morning-Tuesday Morning...
isolated to scattered snow showers will be possible across Northern and Central Illinois Monday morning and afternoon. Little to no snowfall accumulation is expected. It is looking increasingly likely that an area of snow will drop south out of Wisconsin and Minnesota, down into Northern Illinois Monday evening. This period of snow will then continue through Monday night, before ending Tuesday morning. Some snowfall accumulation is looking increasingly possible during this time, with upwards of dusting to 2” being possible for some areas.
Final rainfall accumulation for this period will be 0.50-2.50” across much of the state. Some minor flooding will be possible, for areas that see the higher end rainfall totals. Final snowfall totals could reach upwards of a dusting to 2” across portions of Northern Illinois. Further updates are likely regarding this multi-day period.
