Heavy Snow Once Again Slamming St. Louis Area (Sun-Mon, Dec 15-16th Winter Storm)

(11:00AM - 12/16/19) A brief short term update regarding the ongoing winter storm affecting the state.

A large area of precipitation has spread across Southern Illinois this morning. From St. Louis on northeast along the I-70 corridor, light to moderate snow is falling. Periods of heavy snow will also be possible, with snowfall rates of 1-2"/hour, as well as isolated occurrences of thundersnow being possible. Widespread snow will continue across portions of Central and Southern Illinois into and through the afternoon. After this time, periods of snow will be possible through the evening and into tonight, before ending. A couple to several inches of snowfall accumulation is likely, depending on location.

Further south, a transition zone of rain/snow/freezing rain is occurring across Southern Illinois, south of the main snow axis. Across this area, minor ice and snow accumulation is likely. Across far Southern Illinois, such as the Paducah area, precipitation will generally stay as rain for the most part.
