ICE STORM WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR NEW YEARS DAY

2021 will bring us its first challenge, literally on the first day. A winter storm will move through the area with ice being the primary hazard to contend with. Accumulations will easily exceed .25" across a large chunk of central and western Illinois. Below is a summary of the warnings issued by the NWS followed by our official TAM forecast

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE National Weather Service Lincoln IL 410 PM CST Thu Dec 31 2020 ...Ice and Snow Accumulations Likely Late Tonight through Friday Night... .A winter storm system is expected to bring mixed precipitation including freezing rain and snow to the region late tonight through Friday. This system will track south to north, with freezing rain expected on the leading edge. As temperatures warm Friday morning, rainfall will over take freezing rain. Ice accumulation is expected throughout much of the region, with upwards of 0.3 inches between the Illinois River Valley region and I-55 corridor. Dangerous travel conditions will occur Friday across central Illinois, as well as damage to trees and power lines due to ice accumulation and stronger northeast winds on Friday. Including the cities of Lincoln, Clinton, Beardstown, Petersburg, Winchester, Jacksonville, and Springfield 410 PM CST Thu Dec 31 2020

* WHAT...Significant icing expected. Total snow accumulations of up to one inch, and ice accumulations of three tenths to four tenths of an inch. * WHERE...Portions of central and west central Illinois. * WHEN...From 3 AM to 6 PM CST Friday. *

IMPACTS...Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commute.

Peoria-Marshall-Fulton-Schuyler- Including the cities of Peoria, Lacon, Canton, and Rushville 410 PM CST Thu Dec 31 2020 ...ICE STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM FRIDAY TO MIDNIGHT CST FRIDAY NIGHT...

* WHAT...Significant icing expected. Total snow accumulations of up to two inches, and ice accumulations of two tenths to four tenths of an inch.

* WHERE...Peoria, Marshall, Fulton and Schuyler Counties. * WHEN...From 6 AM Friday to midnight CST Friday night.

* IMPACTS...Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commute.

Woodford-Tazewell-McLean-Mason- Including the cities of Eureka, Pekin, Bloomington, Normal, and Havana 410 PM CST Thu Dec 31 2020 ...ICE STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 3 AM TO 6 PM CST FRIDAY...

* WHAT...Significant icing expected. Total snow accumulations of up to one inch, and ice accumulations of three tenths to four tenths of an inch.

* WHERE...Woodford, Tazewell, McLean and Mason Counties. * WHEN...From 3 AM to 6 PM CST Friday.

* IMPACTS...Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commute.

Livingston- Including the cities of Pontiac, Dwight, and Fairbury 318 PM CST Thu Dec 31 2020 ...ICE STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM TO 6 PM CST FRIDAY...

* WHAT...Significant icing, downed tree limbs, and power outages expected. Total ice accumulations of one quarter to one third of an inch and wind gusts to 30 mph are expected.

* WHERE...Livingston County.

* WHEN...From 6 AM to 6 PM CST Friday.

* IMPACTS...Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the combined weight of ice and gusty winds. Travel will be difficult on untreated roadways.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Freezing rain will change to liquid rain toward the noon hour, and possibly briefly back to snow toward evening.

Ford- Including the cities of Paxton and Gibson City 318 PM CST Thu Dec 31 2020 ...ICE STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM TO 6 PM CST FRIDAY...

* WHAT...Significant icing, downed tree limbs, and power outages expected. Total ice accumulations of one quarter to one third of an inch and wind gusts to 30 mph are expected.

* WHERE...Ford County.

* WHEN...From 6 AM to 6 PM CST Friday.

The period of heaviest freezing rain will be from sunrise through early afternoon, depending on where you are. Temperatures will warm a couple degrees above freezing and change things over to just plain rain, first occurring across southern Illinois and then spreading north.
