Moderate To Heavy Snow Spreading Across State AS Winter Storm Continues *Short Term Update*

(4:00PM - 1/11/20) A winter storm continues to affect the state today, and will continue to into tonight.

A large area of snow has developed across states adjacent to the southwest of Illinois this morning and afternoon. This area of snow has already spread into Northwest, Western and Southwest Illinois, and has also been rapidly expanding. This area of snow will quickly overspread the rest of Northern and Central Illinois by late afternoon. Across Eastern and Southern Illinois, precipitation will start as a mix, before changing over to snow. Periods of moderate to heavy snow are likely across Northern and Central Illinois, with low visibility and 1-2"/hr snowfall rates. Thundersnow will also be a possibility as well. Additionally, lake effect snow has been ongoing for the pasts several hours across portions of Northeast Illinois near Lake Michigan, with upwards of a dusting to 1.5" of snow reported thus far. Lake effect/enhancement will continue to be likely as the aforementioned main area of snow moves through late this afternoon into tonight, which will aide in higher snowfall totals for these areas. Snow will end from west to east across the state tonight. In addition tot he snow, high winds will continue to be likely across Northeast Illinois, with wind gusts of 25-45mph continuing into tonight, before subsiding. The combination of elevated winds and moderate to heavy snow will likely lead to blowing and drifting snow.

​Snowfall accumulation in an axis across Northern and Central Illinois will be 2-6", with lighter amounts of 1-3" on either side of this main axis. Isolated higher amounts in excess of 6" may be possible across far Northeast Illinois, where lake enhancement adds to totals.
