Mon, June 22nd Severe T'Storm Threat Update #2

6/21/2020

(9:00PM - 6/21/20) A storm system moving through the region will bring the chance for severe t'storms to the state on Monday.

Synopsis...
A storm system and several disturbances are expected to move through the region on Monday. Isolated to scattered showers and t'storms will likely be ongoing across portions of Northern and Western Illinois, Monday morning. Some of this activity may persist into the afternoon across portions these areas, with the potential for re-intensification. Additionally, new scattered showers and t'storms will develop across the state and surrounding states during the afternoon, as several disturbances move through the region. Both previous re-generated morning activity and new afternoon development will push eastward across much of the state in the form of several clusters/lines, Monday afternoon through early Monday night. The environment expected to be in place will feature low instability, decent moisture, decent shear and decent forcing. This will lead to a low end severe t'storm threat across the state, with a minimal (level 1) severe t'storm risk expected. Large hail and damaging winds being the main threats. Trends are being monitored for the potential for a more concentrated area and/or increased overall severe t'storm potential for portions of the state. Should one or both of these become more likely, an upgrade in severe t'storm risk may be needed in a future update.

Below is the severe t'storm forecast for this event.

On 6/20/20, I was driving south on I-55, south of Springfield, Il. I encountered a weather event that brought blinding rain driven by high winds.

I saw a "wall cloud." like ones "storm chasers" show on their programs as they attempt to get close to tornadoes. I've seen "wall clouds" approach while sailing on Lake Michigan. I learned to prepare ASAP since some of them are travelling at 30+ mph. Sure, I occasionally left the sails up to experience the interaction of boat, wind, and water; better to have planned practice rather than no practice.

Vehicles in front of me ( I couldn't see over the Pick-up that I followed) slowed and brake lights lit the highway. I was lucky to be behind drivers who spaced themselves and slowed before the rain and wind arrived. not instantly, I was able to keep a longer distance between us. It's s bad thing is to stop abruptly and/or tailgate during one of these events.

During the event, I followed a pick-up that had turned on the emergency flashers and they were visible most of the time. Visibility was less than 100 feet with repeated loss of visibility for several seconds at a time. I chose to drive at slow speed rather than pull off with others that were easy targets for drivers who might have lost control of their vehicles. A few vehicles were stopped while partly in the driving lane.

I assume that the accidents that I saw occurred when visibility was first lost and the involved vehicle slowed or stopped quickly before those behind realized what was occurring.

Do you have any information related to this event?

thank you
