4:40PM - 1/22/19) Short term update on the winter storm that's affecting parts of the state currently...
At this time a mix of freezing rain and a bit of snow is ongoing across much of Northeast Illinois, including the Chicago area. Many areas have already received up to 0.10-0.20" of ice accumulation. This mix of precipitation will continue in the short term, with additional ice and minor snow accumulation likely.
Across portions of Northwest and North-Central Illinois, freezing rain/drizzle has now transitioned to snow for many areas, as expected. Periods of moderate to heavy snow and snowfall rates of 0.5-2" per hour are likely at times. A few to a couple of inches of snow accumulation is likely in the short term.
