(8:00PM - 1/3/22) The 2021/2022 snowfall season started off slow and late for many across Northern and Central Illinois. Prior to the past week or so, much of Northern and Central Illinois had seen little to no accumulating snow, let alone much in the way of any flakes falling from the sky. However, over the past week or so the pattern shifted to being more favorable for cold and snow, which brought a few accumulating snowfalls to Northern and Central Illinois between Christmas and New Years. These accumulated snowfalls impacted cities such as Chicago, Peoria and Springfield...all of which saw their first measurable snow on the season.
Chicago set a new record for the latest measurable snowfall on record, with the first snowfall this season on Dec 28th. This new record date beat the previous record of Dec 20th (2012) by 8 days. For Peoria and Springfield, accumulating snowfall has also occurred over the past week. While not records, Peoria and Springfield did attain a mark of top 5 latest measurable snowfall on record for this season.
