(9:00PM - 5/11/20) Following the last grasp of winter this past weekend and to start this week, sustained spring weather is on the way...potentially even summer-like.
A significant pattern change will be taking place across North America over the coming days, which will usher in sustained spring weather..potentially even a bit summer-like. During this recent cold snap, the pattern featured a highly anomalous ridge in the Western US/Western Canada and a highly anomalous trough in the Eastern US/Eastern Canada. This brought late season cold temperatures and snow to the state the past several days, and even record breaking cold and accumulating snow across portions of the Great Lakes and Northeast. On the flip side, the Western US up into Alaska was enjoying temperatures will above normal, with even 80 degree temperatures in Alaska. 
The first stage of the pattern shift will be from the middle of this week through this weekend. During this time, the quickly departing trough will be followed by a somewhat zonal-ish flow. This will usher in warmer temperatures, along with increased chances for rain and t'storms...potentially including some severe t'storm and/or flood potential. Beyond this upcoming weekend, there is a large amount of support for a large ridge to develop across the heart of the US for a good portion of next week. This would lead to warm to hot temperatures and continued rain and t'storms chances across the heart of the country, including Illinois. It is still too far out to get into specifics, but that type of pattern *could* support more summer-like weather.
So while winter has been tough to let go, it finally appears the end is near, and we will be progressing towards more typical mid-late May type weather.
