Thur, April 9th High Winds And Snow Squalls

(9:30AM - 4/9/20) In the wake of the recent warm temperatures and severe t’storms across the state over the past several days, the weather is expected to take a flip in the opposite direction...with colder temperatures, high winds and snow squalls likely across the state for today.

High winds will be likely across the state today. Deep mixing to upwards of 750-600MB is expected, where winds are in excess of 50-70KTS. This will be translated to the surface in the from of widespread 35-50MPH wind gusts across the state. from this morning through this evening. 

Snow squalls will be likely across Northern and portions of Central Illinois, from later this morning through this evening. Environmental conditions feature...steep low level lapse rates ~10C, low freezing levels around 900MB, colder air aloft (-5C at 850MB) and CAPE upwards of 400J/KG. The combination of these ingredients sets the stage for convective snow squalls across the aforementioned areas for today. Brief periods of heavy snow, potentially occasions of thundersnow, and graupel (small hail) will all be likely with these squalls. Minor snowfall accumulation will be possible with the heaviest of squalls, but this will quickly melt with the passing of said squall. Higher wind gusts of 45-55MPH will be possible in the squalls, which would create brief periods of blizzard conditions.
