(1:30PM - 1/22/19) Afternoon update... The anticipated winter storm has started to affect portions of the state this morning and early afternoon, with widespread freezing rain/drizzle ongoing across portions of Northern and Central Illinois. Periods of snow, freezing rain and rain will affect the state from now through early Wednesday afternoon.
As mentioned, areas of freezing rain/drizzle have been ongoing across much of Northern and portions of Central Illinois this morning and early afternoon. Freezing rain/drizzle will continue across much of Northern and portions of Central Illinois this afternoon and evening. However, as temperatures have warmed into the mid-30's across Central Illinois, some of this has turned to plain drizzle/rain across portions of Central Illinois. As the afternoon and evening goes on, mild temps will continue to spread north, with mid-30's making it as far north as around the I-80 corridor, changing precip from I-80 and on south to plain rain, while areas in the vicinity of the I-88 to I-80 will be hovering between 33-31 degrees, with either freezing rain or plain rain being possible into tonight. The heaviest axis of ice accumulations will run from around the Quad Cities on east into the southwest to northern suburbs of Chicago, where up to around 0.25" ice accrual is likely. Isolated higher amounts are possible if a favorable temp environment stays in place longer.
Further northwest, freezing rain/drizzle and some mixed precip has been ongoing across portions of Northwest Illinois this morning. As heavier precip moves in later this afternoon and evening, a change to all snow will occur, with snow continuing through tonight and tomorrow morning, before ending by early tomorrow afternoon. Periods of moderate to heavy snow and snowfall rates of 1-2" per hour are possible at times. The axis of heaviest snowfall accumulations of 6-12" will be across Northwest Illinois, in the vicinity of the Dubuque to Rockford areas.
Further south, this will be an all rain event across Central Illinois from around I-72 on south and all of Southern Illinois
Below are our updated TAM snowfall and ice accumulation maps. Additional short term updates are likely regarding this storm today and tomorrow.
