Weekend Snow Event (Sun, Feb 9th) Update #4

2/8/2020

(11:15PM - 2/8/20) Yet another storm system is expected to move through the region this weekend, bringing the likelihood for some accumulating snow to portions of the state on Sunday.

Synopsis...
Real-time observations tonight across the Midwest and Plains suggest most model guidance is running a bit too far south with the track and main snowfall axis with this storm system. While this has ramifications on snowfall amounts for portions of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin...It has no affect on Illinois, with still full agreement on upwards of 1-3" of snow across much of Northern Illinois. Previous forecast looks on track for Illinois, with little in the way of changes needed with this update.

A storm system is expected to move through the region, and spread precipitation across the state from early Sunday morning through Sunday night.

Across Northern Illinois...Precipitation will enter Northwest Illinois early Sunday morning, then spread across all of Northern Illinois through the day, before ending Sunday night. Dynamic and evaporative cooling will likely keep precipitation as mostly snow during the heavier and organized precipitation, from early Sunday morning through Sunday afternoon. Periods of moderate to heavy snow will be likely during a couple hour period Sunday morning and afternoon. Model soundings suggest high snowfall rates and thundersnow may be possible during this time as well. Precipitation will then turn to a rain/snow mix as precipitation becomes lighter and temperatures warm, from Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.

Across Central Illinois...Precipitation will start as snow or a mix Sunday morning, before quickly transitioning to rain as times goes on Sunday morning. Minor snow accumulation of a dusting to 1" is possible across portions of Central Illinois. For Southern Illinois, the entire event will be rain.

Final snowfall totals of 1-3" is likely across much of Northern Illinois, tapering to a dusting to 1" across Central Illinois.

Below is the snowfall forecast for this event.
