Weekend Snow Potential Update #1

(9:00PM - 3/12/20) While temperatures have been mild, severe t'storm threats have existed and we have quickly entered mid-March...Wintry weather will make a brief re-appearance over the weekend, as potential continues to increase for an accumulating snow event across portions of the state on Saturday. However, this will only amount to a minor/nuisance event for affected areas.

Synopsis...
A disturbance is expected to eject out into the region on Saturday, however it will be in a weakening phase as it pushes eastward. There has continued to be high model guidance agreement in an accumulating snowfall event impacting the state during this period, and fairly good agreement on location of the snowfall axis.

Precipitation is expected to spread into the western half of the state by early Saturday morning. Across Central, the onset of precip may start as rain, before changing over to snow. Snow will then continue across Central Illinois from Saturday morning into early Saturday night, before ending. Given the recent mild/warm temperatures and expected marginal temperatures in the 30's during this event, snow will likely not efficiently accumulate. Thus, highest accumulation will be on colder surfaces (such as grass), with road accumulation far less. These temperature factors will also play a roll in final snowfall accumulation amounts as well. ​

Final snowfall totals upwards of 1-3" will be possible within the main axis, across Central Illinois, with amounts tapering to a dusting on either side of this main axis.
