(6:30PM - 1/24/19) Everything looks on track for late tonight into tomorrow morning and Friday night into Saturday morning, regarding the very cold temperatures and dangerous cold wind chills that will be invading portions of the Midwest, including Illinois overnight and through tomorrow morning and again Friday night into Saturday morning. Some NWS offices have upgraded their areas to wind chill warnings, which includes portions of Illinois as you'll see below.
It is already below zero across much of the northern plains and single digits across portions of the Upper Midwest and these temperatures will only continue to drop through the evening and overnight hours while advecting pushing southeast into portions of Illinois.
For the combination of very cold temperatures and still some gusty westerly winds across the northern half of the state, area National Weather Service offices have issued a wide area of both Wind Chill Warnings and Wind Chill Advisories. You can see those for the counties in light gray (warnings) and light blue (advisories).
Below is an image off one of the high resolution models we look at and these are the forecast wind chill values by tomorrow morning across the area. As you can see, they are coldest across the northern half of the state as that where the coldest temperatures will also be as well. The further south you go closer to the center of high pressure, the lighter the winds are, leading to slightly better wind chill values.
High temperatures on Friday will be held in the single digits across much of Northern and Central Illinois, with wind chills of 0 to -15.
Bitter cold temperatures and wind chills are once again likely Friday night and Saturday morning across portions of the state. Temps will likely be well below zero across Northern Illinois, with wind chills once again -10 to -30. Temps slightly above to slightly below zero are expected across Central Illinois, with wind chills of 0 to -15. Wind chills headlines will potentially be needed once again for this period.
Below is our TAM temp/wind chills forecast for tonight through Saturday morning.
