Winter Returns With A Pre-New Years Snow Event (Mon-Tue, Dec 30-31st)

12/30/2019

(11:30AM - 12/30/19) The two storm systems that have been moving through the region the past few days brought heavy rain and mild temperatures to the state this weekend. On the backside of these storm systems, a return to winter-like conditions will occur, with accumulating snow likely for portions of the state this evening through Tuesday morning.
Monday Morning-Tuesday Morning...
On the backside of the second storm system moving through the region, scattered snow showers occurred across portions of Northern Illinois this morning, bringing a dusting of snow to some areas. Additional isolated snow showers will be possible across Northern Illinois through this afternoon, though little to no snowfall accumulation is expected.

Of more focus will be an area of snow that is expected to push southward out of Wisconsin and Minnesota, and down into Northern Illinois this evening. This period of snow will then continue through tonight, before ending Tuesday morning. Snowfall accumulations will generally range from a dusting to 2" for most areas across Northern Illinois...potentially into portions of Central Illinois as well. However, isolated higher snowfall totals of 2-3" will be possible closer to the Illinois/Wisconsin border. This snowfall will likely lead to some travel issues across Northern Illinois for Tuesday morning.

In addition to the snow, windy conditions are expected across much of Northern and portions of Central Illinois this afternoon through Tuesday morning. Wind gusts of 25-40mph will be possible during this time. Some blowing snow will be possible tonight into Tuesday morning for some areas.

Below is the TAM snowfall forecast for this event.
