(10:45AM - 1/11/30) The winter storm will continue to affect the state into tonight.
The heavy rain threat has ended across the state, though some residual ongoing flooding will continue to be an issue for some areas. Rainfall totals of 1-4" occurred across much of the state, with a corridor of 3-6" totals across portions of Central/Southern Illinois. High winds have also been occurring, with widespread wind gusts of 25-50mph across the state last night into this morning, with isolated 50mph+ wind gusts having occurred in some areas.
As for the rest of today and into tonight...
A mix of light snow/sleet/freezing rain has been ongoing this morning across Northern and Western Illinois. This transition mix zone will continue to spread east/southeast with time into Central Illinois, as colder air filters in. Minor snow/sleet/ice accumulation is possible. Wind gusts of 20-40mph will continue to be possible across the state through the day and into tonight, slowly subsiding with time. The one exception will be across Northeast Illinois, where 30-50mph wind gusts will be likely through the day and into tonight, before also subsiding later tonight. The main focus will be mid afternoon today on into tonight. As the main storm system pushes northeast across the region and strengthens, a large area of snow is developing this morning across Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas. This area of snow will push northeast, and spread across much of Northern and Central Illinois from mid afternoon today on into tonight. Periods of moderate to heavy snow with 1-2”/hr snowfall rates and thundersnow will be possible, especially across Northeast Illinois this evening and early tonight. Snowfall accumulation of 1-3” will be widespread across the aforementioned areas, with upwards of 3-6” in an axis across Northern and Central Illinois. Some lake enhancement is possible near Lake Michigan. Below is the TAM snowfall forecast for this event. *Note: The map includes snow that has already occurred across portions of NE/IA/WI/IL/KS.
