(5:30PM - 12/14/19) A winter storm is set to move across the region Sunday and Monday, bringing several inches of accumulating snow to a large portion of the state during this time.
No significant changes were needed for this update...just small adjustments to expected snowfall accumulations.
An area of snow is expected to begin to enter Western and Southwest Illinois by mid-late Sunday morning. This area of snow will overspread across Central Illinois by afternoon, continuing through Sunday night or early Monday morning. Periods of moderate to heavy snow, with snowfall rates of 1"/hour, will be possible during this time. There is the potential for a lull in the snow for a time Monday morning. Another area of snow will then push across Central Illinois later Monday morning, then continuing into late Monday night, before ending. Once again, periods of moderate to heavy snow, with snowfall rates of 1"/hour, will be possible during this time. Monday morning and evening rush hour travel will likely be significantly impacted across Central and Southern Illinois. Further south, a mix of precipitation will be likely across Southern Illinois; including snow, ice and rain. There will likely be a corridor that sees a longer period of freezing rain.
A large swath of 3-6" snowfall totals will be likely across the heart of the state, with a corridor of higher snowfall amounts of 6-9” possible. On either side of the main axis, amounts will quickly taper...These gradients will likely be tightened as the event nears. Additionally, some ice accumulation is likely across Southern Illinois, with the potential for in excess of 0.10" for some areas. Below is the TAM snowfall and ice forecasts for this winter storm.
