Wondering About The Odds Of A White Christmas?? Bad News For Snow Lovers...

After a winter storm has affected portions of the state with a significant snow accumulations the last day or so, we will enter what will be a very quiet and dry pattern across the Midwest, including here in Illinois as well. Eventually, there are signs pointing to what could be some impressive warmth as we get closer to the Christmas holiday. A brief initial article follows below.....

As we near the upcoming weekend, both operational and ensemble model guidance continue to paint a picture of a fairly strong and impressive mid-upper level ridge initially across the Rockies by Saturday of this coming weekend. Beyond that, it is forecast to slowly work its way eastward into the plains and eventually closer to us in the Midwest, as you can see in the loop below. 

By next Tuesday so about 7-8 days from now, you can see model guidance has the ridge centered pretty much smack over the Midwest and Illinois. This is typically a favorable large scale pattern for above normal temperatures across our region with the ridge overhead and the trough well to our west. If you're a fan of warmth on Christmas or near the holidays, this is the pattern for you. However, if you are wanting a white Christmas like myself, this is the pattern you do not want to see....

It is too early to get into specific details like potential high temperatures but it does look like a big chunk of the United States is in store for some impressive warmth as you can see below with the 21st to the 25th outlined in the image.
